Orthodontic Treatment

What are Dental Braces?

Dental braces are used in Orthodontics to align and straighten crowded/crooked teeth, or a misaligned jaw (malocclusion) or to fix gaps. They are also used to help position teeth with regard to a person's bite, while also aiming to improve dental health.

What are reasons for crowded/crooked/misalined teeth?

Dental crowding occurs when there is not enough space in the mouth for permanent teeth to grow in straight. Crowding can either be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the persons jaw size and how many teeth he/she has. The primary causes of teeth crowding are due to having teeth that are larger than the jaw or a jaw that is too small. Losing baby teeth too early can also cause dental crowding.

There are various causes for Crooked teeth like genetics, jaw injury, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking.

Malocclusion is a misalignment between the upper and lower teeth lineup when they approach each other as the jaws close. Malocclusion is most often hereditary. Other causes include Cleft lip and palate; childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifier use beyond age 3, and prolonged use of a bottle; jaw injuries; Mouth, jaw tumors.

What type of braces are available?

Traditional Metal Braces:

Metal braces consist of brackets that are affixed to your teeth. Wires are threaded through slots in the brackets. The brackets are typically made of stainless steel and the wires stay connected to the brackets by small rubber bands. The wires put a constant, yet gentle, force to properly align your teeth.

Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, but they use clear or tooth-colored brackets rather than gray or metallic silver brackets and wires.

Self-Ligating Braces:

Differing from traditional braces, self-ligating braces do not have the elastic ligatures. In other words, there are no elastic ties or metal ties because they are simply not needed. Rather, self-ligating braces have a door mechanism that is opened and closed to hold the tooth-aligning wires. The brackets for self-litigating braces can be made of metal, ceramic, or clear material.

Aligners:

These are invisible/clear trays that you wear over your teeth that gradually move them into desired alignment. Patients remove the trays before eating or drinking, so there is no need to restrict your diet while using clear aligners. This also makes brushing and flossing hassle-free. Since these are made of smooth plastic, patients don’t run into problems like wires poking their gums and cheeks.
